Anderson Silva Gets Title Shot If He Defeats Nick Diaz
UFC president Dana White has revealed that former middleweight champion, Anderson Silva could earn himself another title shot, should he defeat Nick Diaz at UFC 183.
During last nights ‘UFC Tonight’ episode, White was asked what he’s looking forward to in 2015:
“Diaz and Anderson Silva are fighting. And obviously if Anderson Silva wins that fight, and whether Vitor or Weidman win that fight, then you have an Anderson Silva versus one of those guys.”
Anderson Silva won sixteen straight fights in the UFC’s Octagon before facing Chris Weidman at UFC 162. Silva took his taunting and showboating too far in the fight, and in the second-round, Weidman dropped Silva with a left hook to dethrone the man who was viewed as the #1 pound-for-pound MMA fighter at the time.
Because of his long-reigning dominance in the UFC as a champion, Silva was granted an immediate rematch against Weidman.
The rematch took place at UFC 168. And this time, Silva wasn’t into playing any games in the Octagon. He was aggressively attacking Weidman from the opening bell. However, in the second round, Silva threw a hard leg kick that broke his leg and had him crumple to the mat in agony.
Silva vowed that his fighting career was not over and that he intended on working hard to make a full recovery.
Chris Weidman will defend his title for the second time when he faces Vitor Belfort at UFC 184. Should Belort win, it would be the second time Silva and Belfort will fight, as Silva knocked out Belfort with a highlight reel front kick at UFC 126.
Nick Diaz has not fought since his unanimous decision loss to Georges St-Pierre at UFC 158. It’s unknown what could be in store for Diaz if he defeats Silva.
UFC 183 takes place on January 31st, 2015 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Dana White makes the comments at the 4:23 mark of the video.
