Bellator In Talks With Free Agent Rory MacDonald
It appears that Bellator have began talks with free agent welterweight star Rory MacDonald. Back in March, MacDonald told Ariel Helwani on ‘The MMA Hour’ that the Stephen Thompson fight was the last on his UFC contract, and that he planned on testing out the free agent market after it.
Just a few weeks ago, Bellator president Scott Coker had this to say abut possibly acquiring MacDonald:
“It really comes down to, we’re Bellator, and we’re going to go after all free agents. When [MacDonald’s] contract is up, and I think he might have some contingencies in the negotiation period, and we’re not going to breach any contracts. But when they are ready to talk, we’re here and Rory’s somebody we’d definitely be interested in when he’s free.”
Although MacDonald is currently on a two-fight losing streak, he’s still considered one of the best welterweight’s in the world. His UFC 189 title fight loss against Robbie Lawler was awarded ‘Fight of the Year’ at the 2015 ‘World MMA Awards’.
Will Bellator be able to offer Rory MacDonald a large sum of money that will lure to Bellator? Or will the desire to be a UFC champion keep him with the UFC? We should find out sometime this summer.
Bellator President Scott Coker told me they have begun a line of communication with Rory MacDonald in the hopes of signing the free agent.
