Chris Weidman Wants To Prove Loss To Luke Rockhold Was A Fluke
Former UFC middleweight champion, Chris Weidman, is still disappointed in his UFC 194 performance against Luke Rockhold, which cost him his title. However, Weidman is very grateful the UFC has decided to grant him an immediate rematch, which is set for UFC 199.
In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Weidman makes it clear that he wants to prove that Luke Rockhold beating his was a fluke.
Here’s what he said:
“I know what I’m capable of. I know my potential and I know I wasn’t close to it. The fact that because of what I’ve accomplished in the past gives me the opportunity to get a rematch is a great situation to be in. In most situations, people don’t get the second chance, especially right away.
So, I’m very grateful for the opportunity I have. There’s no question in my mind that I’m gonna go out there and make a statement, completely dominate him and make sure everybody knows the last fight was a fluke.”
At UFC 194, Weidman and Rockhold were having a closely contested fight, until Rockhold got Weidman on the ground near the end of the third round, and inflicted a good amount of damage with ground-and-pound, nearly ending the fight. Weidman managed to hang on and make it into the fourth round.
In the fourth round, a failed spinning-kick resulted in Rockhold getting Weidman down again, this time inflicting enough damage with his ground-and-pound that resulted in the TKO win for Rockhold.
UFC 199 takes place on June 4th, 2016 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
