Cody Garbrandt willing to go to flyweight to fight Demtrious Johnson
Cody Garbrandt became the UFC bantamweight champion at UFC 207 when he dominated Dominick Cruz, the best bantamweight fighter on the planet at that time, by unanimous decision.
He is now set to make his first title defense against his former friend and teammate, T.J Dillashaw, sometime after the TUF 25 season. Although Garbrandt is not looking past the former title holder, he does have the desire to fight the man widely viewed as the pound-for-pound best in the UFC, Demetrious Johnson.
Here’s what the champ said about it on the Aubrey Marcus Podcast:
“I can beat that dude for sure. I can go to ‘25. Obviously, it’s TJ first and foremost. I’m solely focused on him, but you gotta think of other – Conor’s out. Conor’s not fighting. Aldo and Holloway are fighting, so that ties up that division.
“Now, Demetrious, he’s the pound-for-pound best – justifiably so, an incredible fighter, great human. I like him a lot. And his family. But for me, it’s a legacy that I set out to build.
I think that’s something that I need to do. I’m young – 25 – so rather than cut when I’m older, try to go down, go now. The time is now for me with that fight. I really think that should be – after the TJ fight of course.”
Demetrious Johnson possesses a skill set that is somewhat similar to Dominic Cruz’s, he’s got good speed, agility, and movement that makes him tough to catch. He’s also got fantastic takedown defense.
Many MMA fans thought that Garbrandt would have a tough time catching Dominick Cruz for those previously stated reasons, however, he was able to keep pace with Cruz and land some very effective strikes, something many opponents in the past wee unable to do.
Could Cody Garbrandt be the man to hand Johnson his first loss in the UFC since Dominick Cruz did so in a bantamweight title fight in 2011? It’s certainly an intriguing thought.
Let’s see what happens if both men retain their titles in their next fights before this has a chance to come to fruition.
