Donald Cerrone: “I’m Not Scared To Put My Neck On The Line”

We know Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone is not shy to speak his mind. He’s a great example of a company man -saving more than one card and always being willing to step in on short notice. Cerrone believes UFC fighters need a union and so he will happily be the face of the cause.

“I’ll gladly put my head on the chopping block and say I’ll be the front face of this mother f*cker. I’ve paved my way, man, so I’ve earned the right to sit here and speak. I think there’s a lot of people that are scared and not willing to step up and do it. Therefore, it’s gonna take a couple of us and we need to do it.”

The WME-IMG bought the UFC for a whopping $4 billion a few months ago. This may have pushed the union ideas because people started doing the math. According to most calculations, the fighters only receive around 15% of the UFC’s revenue. Additionally, fighters don’t have things like full-scale health coverage and a retirement fund.

“I’ll be the guy, I’m not scared. All I’m saying is we need a fighters union 1,000, million percent, especially with the new owners coming in and I think now is the time. We have no direction, we have no one to stand up for the fighters’ rights. If something bad were to happen, no one backs him and it’s just him alone, as a result, it’s easy to wash it out. We need people to stand up and fight for it.”

Existing Union

The Professional Fighters Association (PFA) is currently the most prominent group attempting to organize fighters. The PFA is looking to name a nine-member executive board of fighters. Cerrone says he scheduled calls for after his fight against Gastelum.

“I am not afraid, I am not scared to put my neck on the line.”
