Johny Hendricks vs Matt Brown Confirmed for UFC 185

The search is over finding Matt Brown an opponent for – it seems the UFC has a Johny ‘Bigg Rigg’ Hendricks ready to accept the challenge.

The UFC just broke the news that former welterweight UFC champion Johny Hendricks has been slated to face Brown in a new fight added to UFC 185 on March 14 in Dallas Texas.

UFC officials confirmed the new bout today Tuesday, jan 13, via their website.

Brown was originally expected to face former Strikeforce champion Tarec Saffiedine who then suffered an injury.

Hendricks (16-3) accepts the fight following his bout in December where he lost the welterweight title in a close decision to current champion Robbie Lawler. Lawler has been quoted as wanting a break after a very intense and busy 2014. It appears Hendricks didn’t want to sit on the sidelines for up to six months for the Trilogy title fight.

After this matchup, we all expect Hendricks to face Lawler in a rematch to close out their trilogy of bouts later this year, but of course this depends on the outcome at UFC 185 now with a title shot likely dangling in the balance for either fighter with a win.

Brown was on a seven-fight win streak before losing a decision to now champion Robbie Lawler – so a victory over the former champion would put him directly in the crosshairs of a championship matchup.

This also brings attention to the rumored fight for UFC 186 putting Rory MacDonald against Hector Lombard. After Dana White promised the title fight to Rory, then rescinded the offer, the Lombard fight is making a lot of sense.

Matt Brown, originally to fight in the main event in Colorado on Feb 14th, this now leaves us with a new main event, Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson battling Brandon Thatch.  The two fighters were already scheduled as one of the featured bouts on the card, but now appears they’ll get the headline bout as the UFC returns to Colorado.
