Junior Dos Santos Had Bad Knee Injury Going Into Stipe Miocic Fight
Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos went into his UFC on FOX 13 fight against Stipe Miocic with an injured knee, according to a teammate.
The fight was very entertaining and ended in a controversial decision that saw Dos Santos get his hand raised in victory. View the official scorecard from the fight HERE
Here’s what Dos Santos’ teammate, Antonio Carlos Jr told ESPN Brazil
“It was a very difficult camp for him. A lot of people do not know, but he was really hurt. The knee it was very bad. Two weeks before the fight, he could not even step on the floor, but he is a very brave face and said that was going to fight anyway.
Without a doubt, it hurt a lot, and we can not forget that the Miocic is also a very good guy, was a very important fight for the Gypsy (Dos Santos).
He used to always finish standing because it has the better MMA boxing. But we do everything together, I try to help him with jiu jtsu and it has evolved a lot in Wrestling too,”
Junior dos Santos never mentioned anything about the knee injury in his post-fight interview or at the post-fight press conference. Would he have brought it up if the judges decision go the other way? It’s hard to tell, since he hasn’t been the type to make many excuses in the past – Besides his UFC 155 loss to Cain Velasquez.
Dos Santos did seem to get tired fairly easily in the fight with Miocic. Maybe the knee injury prevented him from getting optimal cardio training in for it. Or it’s possible Miocic’s aggressive attacks in the early stages of the fight took the cardio out of Dos Santos.
Regardless, the Junior dos Santos vs Stipe Miocic fight was one of the best UFC heavyweight fights of 2014.
