Rory MacDonald To Fight Out UFC Contract And Weigh His Options
Rory MacDonald is set to headline UFC Fight Night 89 against Stephen Thompson on June 18th, in Ottawa, Canada. The fight is the last fight on MacDonald’s UFC contract, he explained to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour.
MacDonald also revealed that his management team and the UFC tried to negotiate a contract extension, recently, but MacDonald wasn’t too thrilled with the money that was being offered at the time.
Rory MacDonald is 9-3 in the UFC and 18-3 overall. In his last fight, he was involved in the 2015 ‘Fight of the Year’ in his UFC 189 title fight loss against Robbie Lawler. Although he lost the fight, he won the hearts of many MMA fans for the heart and warrior spirit he displayed in the contest.
A win over Thompson at UFC Fight Night 89 will not only bring MacDonald closer to getting another welterweight title shot, but also give him some negotiating leverage with the UFC.
If the UFC and Rory MacDonald are not able to agree on a new contract, and MacDonald tests the free agent market, he will certainly draw interest from all of the other big MMA organizations in the world.
